Flashback: Looper – My Robot

My girlfriend has noted my obsession with technology with increasing concern of late. You’re going to become a robot, she says. Failing that, you’re going to find a robot girlfriend, and a whole group of robot friends. And then you won’t need people anymore; your friends will be composed of circuits instead of flesh.

She’s teasing, of course, but I still feel the need to address her concerns: it won’t work, as this song shows. Looper is the electronic-ish project of former Belle & Sebastian bassist Stuart David. Through the bleeps and the loops, it becomes evident that his Ultimate Laziness Project – teaching his robot how to write his songs for him fails. The robot won’t do anything when he turns it on, imbued with the same motivations as its creator. And that’s what any robots I picked up as friends would be: useless chaff that would bore me pretty quickly. Nowhere near as interesting or as rewarding as people, or as special as a great girlfriend.
